Given our technical background and expertise in graphical computation, we began to develop our own vision of what a future-proof shader editor could be in an effort to offer a rich and complete feature set.įor beginners and professionals, our editor is designed to be easy to pick up by providing a familiar and consistent development environment based on Unity's own UI/UX conventions. We found that most editors available at the time of its conception were somewhat lacking and not extensible in any reliable manner that would allow users to adapt them to their specific pipeline requirements. I bought Shader Forge.ASE is a community-driven shader editor for Unity inspired by professional development tools. Turns out there’s an awesome asset called “ Shader Forge” which is a graphical node based editor, just like Unreal… and it’s only $40.Ĥ0 bucks versus the amount of time it would take to learn a shader language? No contest. Spending the time necessary to learn a special shader language before even beginning to try to figure out how to write a good toon shader, seemed like a very expensive proposition.Īpparently, I’m not the only one who misses Unreal’s material editor. As I mentioned last week, your most valuable resource as a lone gun indie game developer is time. However, the prospect of learning a special shader programming language just to make a toon shader, was not at all appealing. Unfortunately, out of the box, Unity does not ship with a toon shader, so going into this, I knew I’d probably have to roll my own. Essentially, my game is supposed to look like a comic book come to life. The art style for my game requires a high quality toon shader.
